To the General Secretary

of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

Comrade L. I. B r e z h n e v

================================

Dear Comrade Leonid!

I got now invited for a fourth time by President Nasser to visit the UAR [United Arab Republic; Egypt]. Both for political reasons and in the interest of the further development of personal relations, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED has decided that I will accept the invitation and propose to President Nasser the 9th of February as the date of arrival. I will be accompanied by: The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Otto Winzer; the Deputy of the Chairman of the State Council, Heinrich Homann; the Head of the Department for International Relations in the Central Committee of the SED, Paul Markowski. In addition, I am supposed to use this opportunity to follow up on previous invitations by the Presidents of the Republic of Iraq and the Syrian Arab Republic.

I have received the approval from the side of the doctors. I am attaching high importance to a consultation with comrades from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the USSR. Comrade Markowski, who currently is [in Moscow] for a meeting with the Foreign Policy Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU, could hold the consultation with comrades in charge at the Foreign Ministry of the USSR and forward me the recommendations of the Soviet friends.

Many Thanks. I wish you a good recovery.

[handwritten signature] Walter Ulbricht

W. Ulbricht

Ulbricht informs Brezhnev about his visit to the UAR following an invitation from Nasser. He also says that he wants to get in contact with the Soviet Ministry for Foreign Affairs in order to establish a common line to present to the UAR. Ulbricht also announces a visit to the SAR and Iraq.
